How To Install The padding for wall upholstery

Choosing Flannel or Dacron Padding for Fabric Wall Upholstery

When installing fabric wall upholstery, you have a couple of options for the padding underneath the fabric. The padding you choose will affect the final look and feel of the upholstered wall.

Additional Information

Flannel vs. Dacron Padding

If you're looking for a smoother, firmer finish, a heavy flannel lining can be used underneath the fabric.

If you want a softer, more padded and plush feel, Dacron is an excellent option. Dacron adds more cushioning underneath the finished fabric and gives the wall a noticeably softer appearance and feel.

Before installing Dacron or any other padding, I recommend testing it with the actual fabric you'll be using. Different fabrics can react differently when stretched over padding, so it's important to make sure the combination produces the finished look you want.

Installing the Padding

The padding is installed inside the wood frame that was created during the first step of the wall upholstery process.

The wood slats form the perimeter and provide the solid substrate needed for attaching the fabric. The Dacron or flannel fills the area inside that framework and creates the foundation that the finished fabric will be stretched over.

Once the padding is installed, you're ready for the next step: applying the fabric to the wall.
