How to Prepare Walls for Wall Upholstery

The first step in traditional wall upholstery is creating a solid foundation for attaching the fabric. In this video, I demonstrate how to install wood slats around the perimeter of the area being upholstered.

The wood slats create a solid substrate that allows the fabric to be properly attached and stretched during installation. The padding will later be installed inside the wood framework, creating the soft, upholstered finish.

Measure each section individually and cut the wood lattice to fit. I use a track/wood cutter to make clean, accurate cuts before installing each piece.

The goal is to frame the entire area being upholstered with wood lattice, creating a continuous perimeter around the wall.

Depending on the construction of the walls you're working with, approximately 1¼-inch nails can be used to secure the wood slats. Always make sure the fastening method is appropriate for the particular wall surface and provides a secure foundation.

Once the wood framework is completed, you're ready for the next step: installing the Dacron padding inside the wood slats.
